Mayfield School, Portsmouth

Client: Kier

The Mayfield School project consisted of a complete strip-out and removal of asbestos from the entire building within and adjacent to live teaching environments.

This project was undertaken over a three-month period in 2021 and was divided into phases to make the works manageable.

Key removal work elements

Key elements of the notifiable removal work relating to this project included the removal of asbestos thermal insulation to pipework within the Boiler Room and main corridor ducts, alongside a multitude of other locations with asbestos insulating board forming the ceiling panels, and panelling under the Main School Stage.

Techniques

A wrap-and-cut technique was used to remove the asbestos thermal insulation to redundant heating pipework under fully controlled conditions, with a constant analytical presence as a reassurance to all persons external of the working area.

Clearly marked and segregated waste and transit routes were used to ensure non-operational personnel and school children/staff engaged with the work areas, this entailed the use of hoarding and fencing with appropriate signage.
