Understanding the Different Types of Asbestos

Asbestos was once widely used in buildings across the UK, valued for its strength and resistance to heat. But when disturbed, asbestos fibres can be extremely harmful to health. If you're dealing with an older property or planning refurbishment, it's important to understand the different types of asbestos and where they might be found.

There are six types of asbestos, but only three were commonly used in the UK

Asbestos is a natural mineral, and it comes in six forms. These are grouped into two families: serpentine and amphibole. In the UK, three types of asbestos were used extensively before the ban came into force in 1999.

Chrysotile (white asbestos)
White asbestos was the most commonly used type and is also known as chrysotile. It has curly fibres and comes from the serpentine group. Due to its flexibility and heat resistance, it was widely used in building materials such as ceilings, roofs, walls and floors. You’ll often find it in cement products, insulation boards, Artex or textured coatings, and vinyl floor tiles.

Amosite (brown asbestos)
Brown asbestos is often found in insulation and cement, especially in materials like pipe insulation, ceiling tiles, fire protection panels and thermal insulation products. Also known as amosite, it has straight fibres and is considered more hazardous than white asbestos.

Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
Blue asbestos is the most dangerous form and was banned earlier than other types due to its extreme health risks. Also known as crocidolite, it has fine, sharp fibres that are easily inhaled. It was often used in high-temperature insulation and spray coatings, and may still be found in spray applications, lagging on pipes and boilers, and asbestos-cement products.

Our Industrial Asbestos Services Include

Industrial asbestos removal

Our team safely removes asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from key areas across industrial buildings. We remove asbestos from roofing sheets and insulation panels typically found in older warehouses and factory units. We also deal with pipe lagging and boiler insulation, which are common in plant rooms and service spaces. Ceiling tiles, floor tiles and other internal high-risk areas are carefully removed using controlled methods.

Safe disposal and waste transfer

All asbestos waste is handled in line with UK regulations and taken to licensed disposal facilities for safe processing. We provide full documentation at each stage to support compliance, reporting and audit requirements. Every consignment is tracked and recorded so you have clear evidence for your site files. This ensures you meet all legal responsibilities and avoid unnecessary delays.

Ongoing support for site managers

We ensure all site personnel hold current medicals, training records and competency certification to meet industry standards. Our team works closely with facilities managers, health and safety officers and project contractors to keep everything on schedule. We maintain clear lines of communication and support throughout the project to reduce disruption and improve efficiency.
